Ever imagined a place where just Phish music is playing and all the people around you are there just to see, watch and listen to Phish playing? Oh yes it’s called Phish tour! It is a colorfully decorated landscape in different cities on different nights where all kinds of happy, music driven, open, people from around the world get together to hear music being created in front of their eyes. There are people new to the show and people who have seen the band 115 times plus more. Add brightly colored hippie skirts, fun expressive t-shirts, lots of pool floaties and glow sticks, freebies such as Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food, people sharing their stories and adventures with this one band and all hoping to have the best show of their lives. Imagine loud jam music playing out, four goofy, fun and family oriented guys- sometimes wearing dresses and playing the vacuum on stage with so many brightly colored and coordinated lights playing to their music. Bright inspirational lights, fun and psychedelic tunes, dancing, singing people- this is a Phish show.
A different city gives each show it’s own outside of the concert vibe. But it seems like always there are signs, banners, stands selling beer and tie-dyes saying welcome Phish fans, inviting the concert into experience the city! This was how it was at Phish Atlantic City. Phish AC was my first Phish “festival.” It was held in an old airport field called Bader Field that overlooked the water and the stretch of casinos, fancy hotels and buildings that make AC. After shows by Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe were held at the Social in the elaborate Revel Casino. With swanky interior decorating, free drinks on the floor, burlesque girls on the bars and hanging from the ceiling, amazing lighting displays and 3D IMAX theatre like ceilings, best of all Phish phans and hippies overran the very private like casino venue. Also a free poster show in the Trump towers brought Phish Phan artists together to display and sell their artwork created an inspired by the band.
Atlantic City provided great big beaches, dog beaches, casinos, boardwalk with rides, people watching and shopping and hours and hours of entertainment. For us non- locals it gave us a chance to visit DC and Philly and the Jersey Shore- home of Snooky-ville and Guido club vibe. Most of all it gave us a unique location to see Phish.
The shows were great. The set lists rocked, the crowd raged and was overall a great time. Phish is not only a great rock and roll experience it provides life lessons to us about ourselves, our loved ones and our neighbors. Perhaps that is why some people feel going to a phish show is what makes them higher.
Saturday night was my favorite, we tuned in to Phish tuning and warming up and as soon as the gates opened ran to get to the rail. We made second row between Trey and Fishman. Fishman wore his dress that night too. It was amazing being so close. How devoted and excited all the other phans Jo had gotten there early to get up close as well. The fellowships forms there were memory making and a big part of the experience as we all fell in love with the music again and again. It was beautiful. In the beginning the music started the crowd ignites and through sky suddenly people are tossing hundreds of glow sticks and blow up fish shaped pool toys. There was joy and excitement all around. The world seemed like a happy place. Everyone just kept throwing the toys and yelling and celebrating it was a funky party!
