What is in Florida in November? It isn’t snow… Bear Creek 2013!

Bear Creek Logo rootdown_subtheme_logoLooking forward into November we will soon be at Bear Creek Music Festival in Florida. This year’s festival will be held at Spirit of Suwannee Music Festival in Live Oak Florida. Live Oak is located in central, northern Florida a few hours north of Orlando and about a half hour south of the Florida/Georgia border. Spirit of Suwannee Music Park is filled with outdoor activities; the park has sprawling grass fields for camping that are dew lit in the morning sun and filled with warming bonfires at night. Large Spanish moss draped oak trees give mystical character to the wooded areas around the festival grounds. The Black River provides water activities along the edge of the park, and in the center of the camping and Shakedown Street vending is a small lake that reflects the moonlight and Christmas lights for campers to admire. There is one large amphitheater and several medium and small sized where music will play for the whole weekend of November 14-17, 2013.

This year, Bear Creek has a lineup filled with many well-known and famed artists that will play music from seaman_lauren_bearcreek_11_12_edit_-175Wednesday night all the way through Sunday night. Wednesday night’s special benefit concert for Shelley and the Michael A’s Children’s Fund includes artists Toubab KreweThe New MastersoundsThe Revivalists and more. Tickets are $25 and sold separately (details below). Thursday through Sunday’s lineup includes a variety of intriguing electronic, rock and jam bands including Space Capone, Kung Fu, Greenhouse Lounge, Galactic, The Werks, Florida local Zach Deputy, the funky Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, COPE, Lucky Costello, Robert Walters 20th Congress, Dopapod and The Roots! Saturday night’s lineup also promises a Bear Creek All Stars Jam with Dumpstaphunk, Lettuce and special guests. This year’s lineup also introduces some very unique performances, including The Shady Horns– the horn trio from Lettuce. The trio performed in Bonnaroo’s hip-hop funk jam this year, except at Bear Creek we will experience NYC’s Igmar Thomas replace Eric Bloom on the trumpet because Bloom is touring w/Pretty Lights. The Shady Horns surpasses with players Ryan Zoidis and James Casey both on saxes (James tours with the Trey Anastasio Band as well). Look for highlight and collaborative performances from George Porter Jr, known as one of NOLA’s finest and the godfather of funk. Also make sure to see Roosevelt Collier and the Florida-bred sacred steel guitarist of the Lee Boys. Last year Roosevelt had the record for most sit-ins in one weekend, playing collaborations with Soulive, Zach Deputy, New Mastersounds and the Dead Kenny GsAnother highlight of this year’s Bear Creek is Skerik. Known for the saxman with Les Claypool, Skerik is funk and punk played in one. We are looking forward to these and other performance highlights at this year’s festival!

If the stellar music lineup is not enough to get you going there is plenty more to look forward to at Bear Creek. Go and shake your booty some more at the Silent Disco on both Friday and Saturday with various DJ’s and tunes! Also, each night will have a costume theme: Friday night is “warm and fuzzy animal theme,” Saturday is “Space is the Place,” and Sunday is “The Color Purple.” Live Oak Park also has a disc golf course and will be holding the annual Zach Deputy Charity Disc Golf Tournament on Saturday and Sunday morning. Not interested in disc golf? No worries. Free yoga and Reiki Sessions will also be held both Saturday and Sunday morning for those who wish to partake in those activities. Bear Creek has numerous live visual artists every year and we are happy to see many of them return this year to wow us with artwork. See all you bears out there in the woods!
