Skin Care & Natural Skin Care

Tonight I felt like making a beauty blog post!

I’m not a skin care insane fanatic, but I have always tried to take care of my skin especially my face and neck.   I also tend to do the au-naturale face, I don’t wear makeup every day. Most days I have a routine of toner or serum and lotions- eye lotions and face lotions preferably with some SPF.  Makeup is fun, I love it, but I’m just not an everyday make girl.  I do however use my eye lash curler (probably multiple times a day, lol) as well as sometimes fill in my eyebrows for a fuller darker look.  Also, sometimes I like to dye my eyebrows and eyelashes for a darker color that feels like makeup.

Anyway I have some tips and a list of skin care I wanted to make- maybe as much for myself as blog readers :). I have been meaning to do this post for a while.  A lot of the tips are from homemade recipes with things around the house and are less expensive and simple- and you know what goes into them!

olive_oil_lg– I have posted before about making sugar scrubs from products around the house, including using oils like olive oil, coconut oil, flax seed oil, etc.. Cleaning the skin with oil is great– your skin feels hydrated, smooth and clean. A good facial recipe:

Directions: Mix 1 tbsp plain Greek Yogurt, 2 tbsp olive oil, 1/2 tsp Lemon oil (find at health food stores, not lemon juice, can use other essential oils but this is very cleansing and uplifting), ingredients together, will be a little runny, massage into skin, immediately wipe off with a washcloth with tepid water (Tepid water is a mixture of 1 part boiling and two parts cold water but you can also use warm water). This can be done daily.

– I always feel like my eyes are a little puffy- a good remedy for this besides cucumber slices, is an eye cooling pack from the store- it is reusable, or after cleaning your skin brew a cup of green or chamomile tea, let cool, soak two clean makeup sponges in tea, squeeze out excess water and let sit on eyes for 15 minutes.  An alcohol free toner is also good for cleaning and tightening pores.  I also like the store bought pore cleaning strips.

– I got these other recipes from Woman’s Day and I like them but there are plenty out there- including Martha Stewart and Wellness Mama- http://wellnessmama.com/7569/oil-cleansing-for-naturally-perfect-skin

Moisturize: rolledoats

Grind 1 Tbsp oatmeal in a blender, set aside.  Add 1 Tbsp fennel seeds to 1/2 cup boiling water and make a tea. Let seeds to steep for 10 minutes; strain seeds and discard. Let tea cool down to room temperature and combine 1 Tbsp of the fennel tea with 1 Tbsp ground oatmeal and 1 Tbsp honey.  Apply to clean face. Leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with tepid water followed by a cool rinse. Do up to twice weekly.

Mask for Oily/Combination Skin

Mix 1/4 cup cooked oatmeal, 2-3 tbspn plain yogurt, 1 tblsp honey. Apply to face. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with cool water.

More (http://multiculturalbeauty.about.com/od/Skincare/a/10-Oatmeal-Facial-Masks.htm)

Lift & Tighten: Combine 2 Tbsp plain yogurt with 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice (the juice of one lemon) and apply to skin. Let mixture dry for 20 to 30 minutes- the mask tighten on skin, creating a lifting and firming effect and a semi-face-lifting effect. Once done, rinse with tepid water and follow by a cool rinse. Do up to two to three times a week.

Brighten: Combine 2 Tbsp sour cream with 2 Tbsp honey and 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. Mix all and apply to clean skin. Leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse with tepid water followed by a cool (not cold) rinse. Do twice a week.

Soothe: Mix 2 Tbsp honey and 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. Apply to clean skin and leave  for 20 minutes. Rinse with tepid water followed by a cool rinse. Can be done three times a week.

– I love steam on my face- obviously not boiling hot steam, but steam from the shower or boil a large bowl of water, place face over with towel over head and steam for a few minutes, gets cold eventually. This really opens the pores for cleaning.

IMG_1215editedAnother version:

Fill a sauce pan with water, add a spoonful of oil- evoo or coconut oil, any oil works, and bring to boil.  Turn off stove once boil gin, add a tea bag (green tea, chamomile, etc). Steep for a few minutes, remove tea bag. Transfer hot tea to a large bowl. Take bowl to relax spot like kitchen table, drape towel over back of neck and sit over the bowl- careful of the heat! If too hot sit further away. This is like a specialized steam bath for the face.  Relax 5-10 minutes, dab off remaining moisture from skin. Moisturize face with small amount of coconut oil.

– I find a lot of makeup removers harsh but lotion is a good remover.  More natural removers can be good.  Here I would like to throw in my call for people to search to use more Cruelty Free products. We know what works for makeups and I think it is time we start asking more companies to stop testing makeup on animals. I know the Body Shop is cruelty free and I love their products!  I also love Aveda – they are cruelty, free, vegan and fair trade.  I like their Tourmaline line for skin care- works great but pricier than homemade recipes. There are plenty of other great lines like Ahava, Arbonne, Burt’s Bees, elf, NYX (http://www.leapingbunny.org/skin.php).  Not all products I use are cruelty free, but I try to buy quality ones that are, most products have the labeling symbol on the back with the bunny  saying cruelty free.

– I learned you can use chafing gel as a primer for makeup- same ingredients and cheaper.

– Anbesol or a numbing gel is great for dabbing a tiny bit on before you wax, pluck or thread!  Another great product I like is Nair- painless, fast and easy.

– A lot of people recommend a juice cleanse for the skin.  Personally juice cleanses are not for me- maybe 1 days worth.  I do like fresh, raw juice however and even just a glass helps a lot for glowing effect and energy perk up!

– Of course, drink more water!

Been Busy!! :) Summer…

So We have been super busy this summer! Lots to catch up and blog about 🙂 yay! We ❤ Blog Readers 🙂

This summer- I visited Max while he was working in Las Vegas for EDC! Wow! Amazing festival- huge ridiculous stages, elaborate artwork everywhere, wild and weird people and the best Dj from around the world made the lineup!  EDC is put on by the same people as Tomorroworld in Belgium and is one of the top EDM/ DJ Music gatherings in the world, it is exclusive, pricey, tickets sell quickly and it is incredibly popular.  Understandably so- the stages are built from the ground with artistic concepts to look like large animals- EDC’s main stage was a beautiful owl- or cities, or incredible nature scenes- like forests and mountains, volcanoes- really awesome! People go out there and dance really hard to the best DJs and most popular electronic hits!

Post EDC we went to Electric Forest festival in Rothbury, Michigan- loved this! This festival was so friendly and fun. It is in such a beautiful area of the country- on Lake Michigan. I don’t think I would bare the winters there very well but the summers there are so beautiful.  Prior to Electric Forest this festival was named after the location called Rothbury. We attended the first 2 years- and then they changed to Electric Forest and this is the first year I have been able to make it back since then! I loved it! I met a great person Mary Lynn from Florida who does acupuncture for a living and is originally from that area of Michigan- a truly inspiring woman! The festival itself is on a ranch called JJ Ranch- with a large woods in the middle that the festival decorates elaborately with lighting, stages and cool things to explore including a silent disco, hands on art structures, a musical train and more! The lineup comprised of rock and jam bands and EDM Djs. Unique- fun exciting- three nights of String Cheese Incident and more such as Pretty Lights, Dispatch, Lotus, Benny Benassi, Beats Antique, A-Trak, etc… For more on my experience here please visit:

Finally, we most recently visited my family and saw Phish in Atlanta for a part of their summer tour. Yay!!! Made me so happy! Phish= 🙂 <3.

Fall has started/is coming. It is October in 10 minutes 🙂  October is one of my favorite months- the weather is always pretty, there are lots of art festivals to vend and attend, the harvest is some of my favorite- pumpkin, apple, figs, root vegetables, sweet potatoes, cabbage . Most of all it feels like the beginning of the holidays!

Las Vegas and EDC Vegas 2013 Photos up!! :)

STS9 and Umphrey’s McGee Tours Unite for August 2013

STS9/UM 8/13 Tour 1

Two awesome bands are coming together for August 2013 to tour the Eastern border of the United States.  STS9 and Umphrey’s McGee will unite for a short tour at the end of the 2013 summer.  This is the two bands’ first tour together since 2008 and it will be one not to miss. STS9 is on fire! This band’s growth over the years has been an astronomical change in both jam music and electronic music. Umphrey’s McGee on the other hand is a jamband playing tunes comprised of rock, hard metal, electronic beats and regga which really bring the party to the house.

The electronic dance music band STS9 formed in Atlanta over a decade ago. The instrumental electronic rock songs from STS9 were and are without a doubt some of the first to pioneer the jamtronica music scene. STS9 is known for being a socially conscious group, one of the top-grossing touring acts, averaging nearly 5,000 tickets per city, and for having a list of opening acts that have included major artists such as Snoop Dogg/Snoop Lion, Bassnectar, Ghostland Observatory, The Glitch Mob, Thievery Corporation, Pretty Lights, Big Boi and countless others.

Similar to STS9 in their ability and fluidity to never put on the same show is the jam band Umphrey’s McGee.  Every Umphrey’s show definitely brings on the rock.  The band has played together for over 13 years and have enjoyable stage presence.  Somewhere in between jam music, instrumental and rock music Umphrey’s McGee plays sets to make you dance! Umphrey’s has played the stage with a variety including Huey Lewis, guitarist Stanley Jordan, John Oates, and jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman, gospel legend Mavis Staples and Sinead O’Connor, to name a few.

STS9/UM 8/13 Tour 2

The two bands in one night will be a fantastic experience of music and fun. The show starts at 7:30 pm on August 24th at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater at Encore Park in Alpharetta, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. The amphitheater is set on 45 acres of landscaped woods; it seats 12,000 people between its roofed and lawn area. It is known for its distinguishable fan-shaped roof and was nominated by Pollstar Concert Industry Awards as 2009 “Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue”.  The venue provides an enjoyable experience for all music fans (http://www.vzwamp.com) Ticket prices will range from $36.25 to $53.70, VIP tickets are also available!

Interview with Coordinator Kelly Raia Light from Illuminture

Tell us more about the Orlando Mind, Body, and Spirit Expo, 2013 and what to expect.

The idea for the event hit me in the head one day while I was taking a shower, you know, where all good ideas come from!  It was really a divine spark of inspiration- and I feel blessed to have been show it by spirit.  The vision was to unite businesses that promote living in a conscious way with consumers who do the same.  Yogis, Nutrition Nuts, Meditators, Holistic Health Fans, and those curious about how they can improve their lives by changing their lifestyles will be able to connect with local businesses who support healthy living.  We are talking total holistic health, Mind, Body, Spirit- so in addition to resources like holistic counselors to help you improve your mind, there will also be Yoga workshops on site to help fortify your body, and don’t forget about the Opening and Closing meditations to nurture your spirit.  We are expecting 50 vendors on site ranging from Massage and Chiropractic care to Pranic Healing. The practitioners will be providing affordable on site mini treatments, vendors will have all sorts of products for you to purchase and enjoy, and artists will have special creations, in which you may invest, to beautify your life.  There will be workshops all day and don’t forget to stay for the closing Meditation by Yotolon Mystery School and drum circle hosted by Jammin! Drum School.

What year of Orlando Mind, Body, and Spirit Expo is this?

This is our very first Orlando event!  We have done previous events in the Tampa area and in the West Palm Beach area- some health related, other entertainment.  This expo is the culmination of drawing together many passions at once to help ignite the conscious living community.

What is something to really forward to at this years Expo?

I personally think the entire event is something to look forward to.  With so many vendors on site, workshops throughout the day, a restaurant and bar at the hotel, and the closing ceremonies it is almost like a mini spiritual festival.  We are also getting approval to have some musicians perform throughout the day, so check our website closer to the event to find out what has been announced!  With so many things happening at once, it is hard to pick a favorite!

Can you tell us something special about this years Expo?

The meditations provided by Yotolon Mystery School are life altering.  Seriously, in just a small amount of time with brother Ankuphara,Will I AM, you will break down walls and remember (As he puts it) your true essence.  There is one bright and early at 9:00 am and another at 5:00 pm, they are free with admission and if I were you (and I am) I would NOT miss out! They will also be bringing their healing pyramid and sacred geometry teachings.  What they are offering to the world is just so amazing!  They are from south Florida and do not travel to Orlando often, so be sure you visit with them now.

What has been something you have enjoyed planning the Expo?

What I have enjoyed the most is the way we have gotten support from everyone.  So many local businesses are excited about this event and that is getting the community excited to attend.  Seeing the vision in action is really exciting and beautiful.

What is your connection to the conscious living, healthy living, and holistic approaches of Central Florida and elsewhere that has brought you to Orlando Mind, Body, and Spirit Expo?

When I was 21, I woke back up.  I became acutely aware that I was running programs and began sweeping my mind and breaking down walls.  After some self exploration and a few life changes, I found myself with a dear friend at a Reiki I Attunement.  That was November 2007 and like so many Reiki stories I read back then, that day is the day my life changed forever.  I completed Reiki II training in February of 2008

and started the journey to become a Massage Therapist in order to legally practice Energetic Therapies in the state of Florida.  I felt as guided then as I do now, and Reiki helped me listen to that guidance on a deeper level.  I had a bachelor’s degree and a “good job” with benefits and I gladly wiped my hands clean to follow a different path.

Prior to starting massage school while I was a student at the University of South Florida, my main function besides “student” was “Event Coordinator”!  I was on the homecoming board twice, coordinated events for a few different offices of the student government, and put together our sorority’s (then) 16 year traditional philanthropic event. I loved every second of it, but did not seem like a field I could actually turn into a career.  After graduating Massage School, I was the assistant director for the Florida Health Expo in 2010 and my assistant director was the promotions captain for that event.

What you are seeing now is the tying together of all the different areas of my life to create this event.  I feel inspired to use all these unique experiences to create this event to be in service to the community.  The Orlando community is so spread out and I feel uniting us all under one roof will build strength and connections between us.

What sets Orlando Mind, Body, and Spirit Expo apart from other similar Expos?

One thing is that money goes directly to the person or business hosting the site, not us, so support them!  Another thing is the size: we aim to have over 50 vendors on site.  We are also hosting three free workshops– the opening & closing meditation along with the drum circle. A few differences are the price-  we are offering half priced admission when you bring in one of our flyers or if you are a fan on Facebook.  The workshops that will be held throughout the day are an additional fee, but most are charging less than $10 for the class

We are also recruiting volunteers!  Please remember we are a small grass roots organization and are keeping things low cost for this event, we would love some help the day of show.  In exchange for 3 hours of your time, we will give you and a friend free admission to the expo!

May- Monthly recap- been so busy! Colors and Bottles, school and more~

I have been working as the  Event Coordinator for Orlando for Colors & Bottles which means I help every event run smoothly.  It is fun and keeps me busy!  I am still teaching Colors & Bottles classes as well.  Attached are photos from an event I did recently at Sleeping Moon Cafe.

This has also been a super busy month for school! I completed new projects including branding and menu for a fondue restaurant I named Fun-due!, a promo video for a local adult fitness boot camp called Fitness By Example, the branding and brochures for a makeup artist / pro photographer team that is selling their services as a package (Mirian Sobrino is the makeup artist, I am the photographer! more later) called L&M Pretty Girl,  branding and website design for a frisbee golf resort that I names the Frisbee Farm Resort & Disc Golf Park, and finally I did an animation for the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Summer Concert Series which was a part of an exclusive screening fundraiser event through Full Sail Friday night.  My animation was a part of a two set concert.  The concert animation is of star trails set to the Peer Grynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46 “In the Hall of the Mountain King”- so cool! Can’t wait to do more of this- you can see part of the animation on my website here-
